Mathieu Da Costa – First Recorded African To Arrive In Canada
In recognition of Black History Month, I would like to draw your attention to a man named Mathieu Da Costa. Canadian historians acknowledge Da Costa as being the first recorded African to have visited Canada. There are not much-recorded documents about his life, but what I can tell you is that Mathieu was a sailor, hired as a translator by European explorers and merchants when traveling to the America’s. Da Costa was part of a crew that arrived in Novia Scotia in 1604 that included the French explorer Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts. Everything else I found on the internet about his life is conjecture and so I will not bother to mention. I encourage our readers to share any factual information you can relay in our comment section.
To commemorate the event, Canada Post has issued a Mathiew Da Costa Canadian postage stamp.
