Kareem Courtney Responds To Korryn Gaines Backlash

On August 1, 2016, Baltimore native Korryn Gaines was shot and killed in her apartment by officer Royce Ruby after a 6-hour standoff. Officers John Dowell and Allen Griffin illegally kicked her door open to issue two arrest warrants. One of those warrants was for Korryn’s fiance Kareem Courtney.  Mr. Courtney was in the apartment with Korryn and their two children(Kareem is not the biological father of Korryn’s first child, the boy who was caught in the gun battle during the standoff).  Kareem Courtney has been and still is receiving a lot of backlash on social media for walking out of the apartment with his daughter and leaving Korryn and her son behind.  Kareem has been pretty much low key since Korryn’s tragic death.  However on October 18, 2016, Kareem made an appearance on the Nuwla fan page to reply to a comment left by Nuwla fan, James Fox.

I immediately contacted the maligned grieving widower, to let him know that allot of people in the black community are saddened and angry about the circumstances of Korryn’s death and that he is more than welcome to tell his side of the story.  I also told him that many men and women on social media have defended his actions and don’t fault him at all for Korryn’s death, and told him they would love to hear him tell his side of the story. Kareem Courtney declined an interview request for this article at this time but did provide several comments for the record in our conversation that I will share with you today.

Kareem Courtney Speaks

No disrespect. I dont do interviews. I’ll say this, as a man to have your name and integrity questioned. To be depicted as a weak person, when you know you did nothing dishonorable hurts my soul. But I can take all the backlash that comes my way. My wife is gone and people talk negatively about her. I’ll answer some of your questions but I’m not discussing details just to satisfy people’s opinion or perspective of me or my wife. To do so would only deflect from the truth.

This was our family and I don’t owe anyone any explanation or story. All the people with their opinions go home every day to their loved ones. My family is destroyed… we know they(The cops) killed my wife and shot my son(Kodi) when they didn’t have to and that’s the truth. I have ten charges so I can’t speak on shit, no way. I have to raise my child.

The people that know the truth should be defending me knowing I can’t defend myself. But I know what this is about and for my wife I can take whatever people have to say about me.

My wife’s name and how people speak about her is all I care about not myself. She was all I had and she was so important to our family and now she went… Everything is broken and can never be repaired. My children don’t have their mother anymore and I don’t have my wife. I know I don’t have a lot of time left on this earth but I don’t want my kids to have to go through life answering questions about their mother and father in a negative light. Let them(The public) have their say. It was only us before this and five and ten years down the line when everyone has forgotten about her, we will still be hurting and that’s just how people are, no respect for life. They only want details so they can justify. But thanks again and we’ll talk for sure one day before I pass fam.

The end.

It’s important to know that I checked with Korryn’s mom Rhanda to find out if her family was in good standing with Kareem and she told me “Yes, very much so… and that “it’s not fair!” She said about the backlash Kareem has been receiving on social media.

So there you have it.  I would like to thank Kareem for taking the time to speak with me and commenting on the backlash that he has received.  It’s a tough time for him and his family, let’s give him all the time that he needs and a chance to tell his side of the full story.
